Attention Deficit Disorder

A child that just can’t keep still is a source of great frustration and concern for parents and teachers. Some children may grow out of it, but for an increasing number there is a definitive problem that requires treatment. One in six children is diagnosed with ADD, a condition given to children who are restless, talkative, distractible, and have trouble paying attention and sitting still.

addNutrient Deficiencies Significant

Brain function and mental performance are impaired when nutrient levels are low. Many children respond quickly to therapeutic doses of vitamins and minerals that address the deficiencies found in ADD. Essential fatty acids are given to balance brain chemistry. Even subtle nutrient deficiencies such as iron, when corrected exert substantial influences on learning and behaviour.

Food Allergies Common

An essential step in the evaluation of ADD is food allergy testing. Sensitivities are usually found to many foods with milk, sugar and additives leading the way. A dietary program emphasizing the avoidance of problem foods can have remarkable results with some parents reporting dramatic improvements within a few weeks.

Suspect Low Blood Sugar

Many ADD children have low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). The primary source of fuel for the brain is blood sugar and when levels are low, the brain cannot focus. Dr. Michael Platt, M.D., goes so far as to use the term hypoglycemia interchangeably with ADD. The reason for low blood sugar appears to be an over-production of insulin. In addition, when blood sugar is low, the body pours out adrenaline to raise sugar levels. Adrenaline makes kids hyperactive. High insulin and adrenaline levels, and the resulting ADD, can be alleviated by correcting diet and hormone imbalances. Some ADD children have inherited hormone dysfunction from their mothers.

ADD2ADD Kids are Toxic

Recent research has definitively linked ADD to environmental toxins, specifically lead, mercury and cadmium that have accumulated in children. Screening for heavy metal toxicity with toxic metal testing is another important process in evaluating a child with ADD. Successful treatment includes the removal of these toxins with natural medicines and detoxifying therapies.

Children Need Sunshine

The incidence of ADD is greater among children who are deprived of natural sunlight. To remedythis situation, children should be spending more time outside in the sun. The usual recommendation is 20-30 minutes per day without sunscreen. The sunshine vitamin (vitamin D) also needs to be raised to optimal levels through oral therapeutic dosing.  Levels for children should be much higher than what is commonly prescribed.

Success is High

Comprehensive treatment with natural medicine can provide major improvements. In many cases the use of Ritalin and Dexedrine (drugs very similar to cocaine) can be avoided, reduced or eliminated by correcting imbalances and deficiencies. Your child’s ability to screen out stimuli and focus attention will improve.
