Crohn's Disease

Known as the “disease of affluence”, Crohn’s disease affects men and women equally.  It is characterized by inflammation, sores and infection in all layers of the digestive tract, and while it can occur anywhere from the mouth to the anus, in most cases it affects the last part of the small intestine.  Crohn’s is usually due to dietary and genetic factors, and has a tendency to run in families.  Smokers and women on oral birth control appear to be at greater risk.  An irregular immune reaction to bacteria in the gut can ulcerate and inflame tissue.

crohnsSlow and Recurring

Crohn’s is a slowly progressing and recurrent disease.  Symptoms include diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain and blockages that can be life threatening, if they impede the movement of waste through the colon (large intestine).  Serious cases will require intervention with drugs and/or surgery, especially during flare ups.

Testing Identifies Deficiencies

Gluten intolerance is common and ruled out with Salivary Gliadin IgA testing.  Levels of DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone), a steroid hormone, are usually low and need to be measured with hormone testing.  Problem foods that should be avoided or eliminated are identified with non-invasive allergy testing.

Natural Medicines Provide Relief

Vitamin B12 injections every two to three weeks repair and keep the digestive tract healthy for proper food absorption.  Essential fatty acids, L-glutamine, vitamin C, sterols and sterolins are beneficial.  The mineral selenium that is commonly low in Crohn’s patients must be replenished.

Strict Dietary Restrictions are Essential

With a digestive system constantly under attack, sufferers must be vigilant about their diet, eliminate food allergies and avoid foods containing refined sugar and white flour.  A diet high in protein, low in fat and consisting of whole grain bread and rice, unprocessed meats and fish, beans and lentils, fresh fruit and green vegetables can boost energy and improve symptoms.  Digestive enzymes, amino acids and beneficial bacteria (probiotics) are often necessary.

Cleanse Your Colon

Colon hydrotherapy is a process that thoroughly cleans out and detoxifies your digestive tract.  By removing waste and toxins from your colon, the systems of your body, including the digestive and immune systems, are able to work more efficiently.  During flare ups or in more serious cases, colon hydrotherapy is not recommended.

Instead of Drugs

Sometimes aggressive drug therapy is the only treatment that works for acute Crohn’s symptoms.  For many patients, however, natural medicines are an excellent opportunity for relief without drugs.  You don’t have to suffer with persistent intestinal pain.  Do something about it.
