Thyroid Disease
Are you experiencing fatigue, weight gain, depression, muscle aches, or memory loss? Perhaps you have joint pain, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, or cold hands and feet? If yes, your thyroid gland may be underactive. The master gland of your body, the thyroid regulates the metabolic rate of other glands and controls the physical and chemical processes in your cells for growth and bodily functions. When it falters, your body malfunctions. You are not alone, as research indicates that 1 in 2 people have low thyroid function that can do go undetected for years.
Blood Tests Are Not Enough
The standard blood test used to evaluate thyroid function is the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) test. It is not sensitive enough to pick up all cases of low thyroid. In fact, many TSH results will fall within the normal references ranges, yet your thyroid can still be low. An accurate diagnosis requires the correlation of blood tests with basal body temperature and clinical symptoms.
Find and Treat the Cause
The natural medicine approach to an underactive thyroid gland is to discover what factors are contributing to the condition and correct the cause. Vitamin and mineral deficiencies include iron, iodine, tyrosine, vitamins D, E, A and minerals. Stress in all forms is bad news for your thyroid. Stress management strategies including relaxation and exercise are critical for improvement. For some patients, the removal of heavy metal toxins through medical detoxification is necessary to eliminate contaminants that affect cell function and metabolism, including thyroid, liver and adrenal performance.
Thyroid-Adrenal Connection
If there is a deficiency of adrenal hormones, your thyroid gland suffers. Conversely, if your body does not produce enough thyroid hormone, your adrenal glands will be adversely affected. In addition, good liver health is essential for optimal functioning of these glands. Natural medicines and therapies, therefore, are often used to treat all three major glands at the same time.
Use Natural Thyroid Hormone
If your TSH blood test indicates low thyroid, drug therapy consisting of synthetic thyroid hormone (Synthroid, Levothyroxine) will be prescribed to correct the deficiency. Initially you may feel better for a period of time, but then the fatigue often returns. Synthetic thyroid contains only T4 thyroid hormone that your body converts to T3 thyroid hormone. Many people fail to respond to the synthetic T4 hormone because they are unable to do the conversion. Most patients feel better on natural thyroid hormone (desiccated thyroid). It is often more effective than synthetic replacements since it contains both T4 and T3, the most active form of thyroid hormone. It’s the closest derivative of human thyroid available. For best results, treatment must be comprehensive including the prescription of other hormones like DHEA and progesterone to balance your entire hormonal system.
Stop Feeling Tired and Worn Out
Our centre has treated thousands of patients with low thyroid function. Some had been suffering from fatigue for years. Many had gained weight and tried everything else without success. Just like you, they were exhausted, and most had normal thyroid test results. And now just like them, you can start feeling well again.
